Colon hydrotherapy is one of the more divisive things offered at wellness facilities, and the writing about it tends to come from advocates or debunkers with little in between. This is an attempt at the middle.

What it is

Warm water introduced into the colon and allowed to drain, repeated over a session of perhaps forty-five minutes, in a private room with a practitioner present.

What we do not claim it does

Remove toxins. Eliminate impacted waste. Strengthen your body’s defences. Treat any diagnosed condition. You will find all of these asserted confidently elsewhere, including in things we have published in the past, and we are not going to assert them here.

The risks, which are real

Electrolyte disturbance, particularly with repeated sessions. Disruption of gut flora. Rarely but seriously, bowel perforation. Infection where equipment is inadequately sterilised.

Contraindications include inflammatory bowel disease, diverticulitis, recent bowel or abdominal surgery, severe haemorrhoids, kidney disease, cardiac conditions and pregnancy. This is why it is prescribed here rather than booked, and why frequency is set by a physician.

On doing this at home

We will not publish instructions for home procedures of this kind, and we would encourage you to be sceptical of sites that do. The complications above are considerably more likely without trained supervision and sterile equipment.
