Temazcal and related practices, held with a partnered medicine man, with medical screening beforehand.
Please read. Ancestral practices are held with a partnered medicine man and are subject to medical screening beforehand. They are not offered as a treatment for, or a means of curing or reversing, any disease or condition, and they are not suitable for everyone. Nothing on this page is medical advice.
A domed temazcal stands at the treeline, set among ferns and palms with a tiled sun motif laid into the ground in front of it. Ceremonies there are led by a partnered medicine man, not by our staff, and that distinction matters — this is his tradition and we are hosting it, not packaging it.
A temazcal is a sustained heat ceremony in an enclosed dome, with rounds of steam, song and sitting in the dark. It is physically demanding and emotionally unpredictable. People cry. People leave early, and leaving early is always permitted.
You are told what to expect beforehand and you are never obliged to take part.
Cardiac conditions, uncontrolled blood pressure, pregnancy, epilepsy, claustrophobia, and medications affecting heat tolerance or fluid balance are all reasons our medical team will exclude someone from a temazcal.
A personal or family history of psychosis, or current psychiatric medication, is a reason to speak to our medical team well before you travel about which practices are appropriate. Some are not, for some people, and we would rather say that in advance.
