Did you know that nearly 40 million people in the United States are currently living with diabetes? (The Facts, Stats, and Impacts of Diabetes, n.d.) It’s a shocking statistic, but what’s even scarier is that there are probably twice as many people teetering on the edge of developing full-blown diabetes – a consequence of our modern lifestyle filled with processed foods and excessive sugar consumption.

Today, we’re zeroing in on type 2 diabetes, a condition entirely avoidable and reversible. Unlike type 1 diabetes, which is a different ballgame altogether, type 2 diabetes stems from our lifestyle choices. Many of us can relate to the allure of fast food, sugary treats, and a dearth of nutritious, whole foods.

But don’t lose hope, because we have an inspiring story to share about Ferhan, a friend I met in Medellin, Colombia. He successfully healed himself from type 2 diabetes, and we’ll delve into his journey, with key takeaways for those looking to prevent or manage diabetes.

Understanding Type 2 Diabetes Symptoms

Symptoms Ferhan Faced:

A couple of years ago, Ferhan received a diagnosis that shook him – type 2 diabetes. It was a wake-up call, to say the least. The symptoms had been present for a while – frequent trips to the bathroom, dry mouth, and insatiable hunger.

In retrospect, Ferhan realized his diet played a major role. Like many of us, he was ensnared by processed foods, fast food, and excessive sugar. Initially, he attributed these symptoms to other factors, like screen time or being overweight.

However, when his libido waned, and sleeping disorders escalated, he knew it was time to see a doctor.

Realization and Wake-Up Call:

Ferhan started to go back to socializing after the pandemic, red flags started to pop up when seeing the reaction of his friends and family to the overweight and diabetic version of himself. After getting tested, the wake-up call hit hard. His blood panel results were alarming, and a lifestyle change was imperative.

The Journey Begins: Developing Resistance to Medication

Medication Hesitations:

Ferhan was prescribed metformin and a statin medication but hesitated to take them. He’d witnessed family members experience debilitating side effects from medications, leading to lifelong dependency. Determined to reclaim his health, Ferhan took charge.

Embracing Lifestyle Change:

Drawing from his prior experience with the keto diet and extensive research, he decided to implement it to manage his diabetes and shed excess weight. He overhauled his diet and sleep patterns, witnessing improvements in blood sugar levels. He eventually convinced his doctor, through tangible results, to let him go off medication.

Shifting Diet: A Key Pivot

Dietary Shift:

Although he didn’t go entirely keto, Ferhan prioritized eliminating processed foods and sugar while embracing a diet centered around meats and vegetables. Resisting medication, he closely monitored his progress, keen to observe how lifestyle changes impacted his condition. His unwavering commitment to these lifestyle interventions played a pivotal role in his recovery.

The Power of Breath and Meditation

Holistic Approaches:

Ferhan discovered the profound influence of non-sleep deep relaxation (NSDR) and conscious breathing on his healing journey. These practices served as valuable tools, helping him manage cravings and boost energy levels. Ferhan’s detoxification journey included substantial dietary changes, alongside improvements in sleep patterns. This overhaul successfully curbed sugar cravings and bolstered overall well-being, reinforcing the link between rest and physical health.

The Path to Transformation: Going the Extra Mile

Relocation for Health:

To achieve his health goals, Ferhan realized he needed to push his boundaries further. Living in the United States, surrounded by a traditional American diet, didn’t align with his aspirations for a healthy lifestyle free from diabetes and sugar cravings.

His quest for an environment conducive to his goals led him to Medellin, Colombia. While this change was beneficial, it wasn’t extreme enough. Ferhan took an additional step by booking a remote cabin away from the city, free from fast food temptations and distractions. This shift provided a psychological boost, reinforcing his commitment to a healthier lifestyle.

Expanding Healthy Habits:

Gradually, Ferhan incorporated more healthy habits into his daily life. He began waking up earlier, spending time outdoors in the sunshine, practicing breathwork exercises, walking up hills, and gradually incorporating cardio and strength training. His journey towards better health continued to thrive.

The Importance of Community:

However, as anyone who discovers a life-changing tool or discipline knows, sharing it becomes essential. Humans are social beings, and sharing our interests and interacting with like-minded individuals motivates us. Ferhan couldn’t discuss these topics with all his friends, so he joined online communities and frequented health-conscious spaces, connecting with new groups of like-minded individuals.

Building a Supportive Community

The Power of a Supportive Community:

Ferhan’s journey underscores the importance of having a supportive community when pursuing health goals. While conversing with those who aren’t health-conscious, some might become defensive, clinging to their unhealthy habits. However, linking up with friends who share your commitment to health is a game-changer. It’s akin to having your personal cheerleaders. Surrounding yourself with like-minded individuals can be an incredible motivator.

For instance, Ferhan’s friend tried intermittent fasting, reaping benefits like laser focus, weight loss, and improved sleep. Inspired by these results, he convinced his brother and mom to adopt similar practices. People gravitate towards results, and your journey might just spark a health revolution in your circle.

In the initial stages, momentum is crucial. So, seek out your squad, those who will energize and support you. Your progress could serve as inspiration for them too.

So, there you have it – Ferhan’s remarkable journey of healing and preventing type 2 diabetes through lifestyle changes. Remember, your diet, physical activity, and mental well-being all play pivotal roles in your health journey.
